Welcome From Ms.

I want to welcome you and
your child into my second grade classroom. I want this to be a happy year for
your family. This will be brief note about what I expect this year.
Children learn best by involving them
in the process. We will do many different types of activities each week to
involve your child. I want your child to answer you when you ask, “What did you
do today?” with something besides, ”Nothing.”
I expect students to do
their best work, be on their best behavior at all times, and be on
time to school. Mornings usually set the tone for the day, a
good beginning at home will mean a good day at school. I will
begin instruction each day at 7:30, it is very important for your
child to be in their seat at 7:30. Seven year olds want praise and
reassurances from the adults in their lives, running late causes
their day to be off to a bad start they more than likely will not be
able to overcome. If, for some reason, a student is having
consistent trouble, I will call for a conference so we can work
together to find a solution to the problem. If there should be a
problem, please call me and set up a conference.
I send home a
Class News on Friday.
If for some reason I can’t send home a Class News I post it on the internet as
quickly as possible. Class News includes what we will be doing each
week, what will be needed by students, and reminders of needs and projects.
Please remember that when working with technology, there are sometimes factors
beyond my control. I believe in
the Multiple Intelligences, every child is "smart" in one of eight
ways:
-
musically
-
mathematically
-
intrapersonally
-
interpersonally
-
with writing
-
with movement
-
with nature
-
with art

Grading:
I use many forms of assessment.
Daily grades count half and test grades count half. Daily grades
consist of participation, group work, written work, and oral work. (Spelling
counts 20% ogf the Language grade) Test grades
consist of tests and home projects.
I have this belief that children are
what you think they are, I always tell my class they are gifted in some learning
way and it usually works when parents think so also.
Grading Scale:
100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-65 D
64-0 F
Some of my observations about
second graders and their grades:
-
all graded papers go in the BEE Book,
or hidden away somewhere
-
students are accustomed to having S,
U, N, E for grades, they don't understand A, B, C, D, F
-
most second graders do not understand
the whole concept of the grading
-
expect a not-so-good grade sometime
-
NAME and HEADING are the only way I
know a paper belongs to a student... student gets a "0" on papers with no names.
