Internet Projects
I love to participate in internet projects with my class. We do several a year. Most of the projects we participate in are through Technospud. Internet projects give my students a chance to learn from each other as well as other classes across the world.
These are our projects for the 2007/08 school year:

Project O.R.E.O
|
We stacked Oreo cookies twice each. We worked with a partner who kept a tally chart as we stacked. Then we changed places. But, first we estimate how many we can stack, then we stack twice and take an average of our stack. Our average stack was 16 in our class. We counted, tallied, added, and divided in order to participate in this project. We also got the chance to compare our class with other classes in Japan, Scotland, Canada, and USA. |

Pumpkin Seed Count Project
|
We began by choosing a class pumpkin from the 3 pumpkins we used. Then we divided into groups to estimate circumference, height, and number of seeds. Then we actually measured and counted seeds from our pumpkins. For this project, we measured, weighed, and came up with strategies to count high numbers. Most of us decided that making groups of 10 was the quickest and easiest way to count. Our 4 and a half pound pumpkin had 770 seeds. We read a very good book, How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara. |

| Holiday Card Exchange Project | We make Holiday Cards and mail to 24 classrooms across the USA. We are mailing to MA, OR, VA, GA, OH, PA, MO, CA, MI, WI, KS, CT, LA, FL, IN, AZ, AND IA. We are also using Google Earth. I found Mt. Carmel Elementary on the map and could even pinpoint our classroom the image is so clear. If you download it, try and find your home with your parents. Remember that you don't use your name when marking your home if you mark it. | |
| From Me To You | We made 25 Valentine Cards and then we made some and sent to Ronald McDonald houses and some hospitals with children who have to spend so much time in the hospital. We learned about some other classes, found locations on Google Earth of the classes we got cards from We got two cards from schools with the same name, but one in the midwest and one in New York. | |
| St. Patrick's Day Project | So... how many marshmallows are in a box of Lucky Charms Cereal. First we sorted the cereal and marshmallows and put the cereal in our baggie. Next we sorted our marshmallows into groups and counted each marshmallow and everyone made an individual graph. Next we made a class graph. It was fun making a class graph, our own graphs, and problem solving. We compared our results with 469 other classrooms. There were 183,082 marshmallow in 469 boxes of cereal. There are more shooting stars then any other marshmallow. |
