Spelling is a skill that is
essential. Spelling practice can be fun and enjoyable. Spelling is critical and
needs to be reinforced daily. Practice helps children be prepared for our weekly
spelling quizzes. This activity list needs to remain at home. Choose an activity
that seems appropriate for the particular word list. Do 3 activities a week in
your Spelling Notebook, I will check Spelling Homework on Friday morning.
Spelling Words: On the Class News I
will send home the weekly spelling list, it will also be posted online, and
there is a page with the spelling words and word wall words.
1. Make the word using letter tiles.
2. Write a sentence for each word.
3. Alphabetize the words.
4. Divide the word into syllables.
5. Write an antonym for each word.
6. Write a synonym for each word.
7. Form the plural of each word.
8. Add endings: s, es, er, ed, est, ing.
9. Illustrate each word.
10. Write a letter using all of the
words or as many as you can.
11. Write a silly story using as many of
the spelling words as you can.
12. Make a crossword puzzle using all
the words.
13. Make a word search using all the
words.
14. Add a prefix to each word when
appropriate.
15. Type all the spelling words.
16. Make a mini-study book using all the
words.
17. Make a flash card for each word.
18. Have the children say the words/or
spell the words into a tape
recorder and then listen to themselves.
19. You dictate the words into the tape
recorder and your child
listens to the tape.
20. They can use their fingers to write
the words into a salt box,
or on a chalk board, use play dough, or
on a sheet of paper.
21. Be creative and think of other ways
to practice with your
child besides a paper and pencil.
22. Take a practice test.
23. Write each word on two index cards
and play concentration.
24. Write your words in three different
colors. Write it once with
one color, then choose another color and
rewrite the word,
finally choose a last color and write it
again.
25. Use Scrabble tiles to spell your
words.
26. Write the words in a rainbow.
27. Write the words and cut out the
shape of the word.
28. Make a picture with the word.
29. Write the word in different kinds of
fancy letters.
30. Sing the spelling of the word.
31. Time yourself spelling words.
32. Have fun with the activity you do.
33. Make a code for each letter of the alphabet ( #=a, 5=b, *<=t) Write the spelling words in code ( 5 # *> spells bat).
Make sure you do some type of activity each day.
